February 8, 2018 – As the 2018 Humanitarian Response Plan (HRP) is launched by the Government of Nigeria and the international humanitarian community, the Nigeria INGO Forum – a consortium of 36 leading international non-government organizations (INGOs) – reiterates its commitment to operate in accordance with global standards including humanitarian principles and adherence to host country’s laws.
INGO Forum members are committed to provide timely, quality and to scale life-saving assistance, strengthen coordination with all stakeholders including the Government of Nigeria, as well as link humanitarian efforts with development opportunities in the affected areas particularly in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe States where possible.
All INGO Forum members are duly registered in Nigeria by the Ministry of Budget and National Planning and submit half-yearly reports to the same ministry. Members have made and continue to make every effort to ensure details of project and programme activities are communicated to all relevant stakeholders. In addition, INGOs are accountable to the communities where they operate through constant communication, consultation and community feedback mechanisms. However, Jennifer Jalovec, Director of the INGO Forum said, “there is growing concern among INGOs that there is a perception that they are not demonstrating accountability nor operating by the rules and regulations existing in Nigeria. The INGO Forum would like to reiterate that its members follow existing regulatory frameworks, operate based on principled humanitarian assistance and are committed to supporting the people of Nigeria.”
The INGO Forum and its members have been and will continue to support localization as prioritized in the 2018 HRP and are committed to boosting institutional capacity of local and national responders. With over 3,000 Nigerian humanitarian aid workers in the north-east, the INGOs along with other humanitarian actors, UN, donors and the government will continue to provide lifesaving assistance to the 6.1 million people in need in conflict-affected areas.
